In a significant development, the National Assembly of Pakistan which is lower house of the Parliament passed the 28th Constitutional Amendment Bill to restore military courts to try civilians charged with terrorism offences. The two year term of the special military courts, which Pakistan had established in 2015 to expedite its war against terrorism, expired last year in December. Pakistan had established the special military courts in order to accelerate its war against extremism and terrorism, which expired earlier this year.
The National Assembly on Tuesday evening passed the 28th Constitutional Amendment Bill to reinstate military courts with 255 votes in favour and four against, surpassing the two-thirds majority required for the measure. Military courts assumed an essential part in war on dread and had positive results of Operation Zarb-e-Azb towards national interests. They were initially built up for rapid trials of fear mongers after an assault on Army Public School in Peshawar that asserted no less than 140 lives, mostly students in December 2014.
Pakistan legitimized military court trials of fear suspects for a time of two years in January 2015. Constitution of Pakistan was amended for the reason in 2015 after all parliamentary gatherings consented to attempt fear mongers through military courts. At least 33 military court convictions were appealed in civilian courts since then, although none of the verdicts has been overturned. Military courts have become essential to end up the menace of terrorism from Pakistan as we have seen gradually decrease in terrorism and violence activities after the establishment of military courts.
The recent wave of terrorist attacks has badly shaken the whole nation when there was finally peace prevailing in Pakistan. It seems like the terrorist groups are restoring their lost confidence and gaining momentum again that was cut down to a great extent by our military forces in various operations they conducted nationwide particularly operation Zarb e Azb. Peace was restored in effected parts of country where military operations were launched and positive outcomes were quite visible as well. Now in recent attacks carried out in all the four provinces including FATA are deadliest of its kind killing enormous number of innocent people which is extremely disturbing.
In Pakistan, Tehreek i Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is believed to be an existential threat for Pakistan. Operatives of RAW (Indian Intelligence agency) who are well penetrated in terrorists outfits like TTP and other affiliated groups are trying to destabilize Pakistan. Most of the terrorists hideouts are situated in the adjoining areas of Afghan border and the biggest problem is the porous border through which terrorists intervene in our country and execute such activities.
It is suffice to say that Pakistan military along with other intelligence agencies are capable of countering terrorism but it must first find a political will to eradicate terrorism within borders. Counter terrorism is a challenge that is not only faced by Pakistan but for the whole region. So all countries must ensure to work together in order to counter insurgency and make peace prevailed in region. It is a high time to take strict actions against terrorists and their allies before they can’t be handled and carry out such heinous attacks again.
Missing persons is a burning issue in Pakistan after five social activists have disappeared in past few weeks. It has been recently seen that Pakistan Army and ISI along with other law enforcement agencies have been blamed for missing person’s uproar. There are people who are of this vision that these law enforcement agencies snatches people who want a more peaceful Pakistan but let terrorists roam free. Protests have been carried out by various Non Governmental Organizations as well as civil society members recently to put pressure on the government to find missing people. People from the province of Balochistan are more in number as compared to others in the missing persons list.
For Pakistan, Balochistan is a province that is basically a gateway for development and prosperity in Pakistan. Enemies being very well aware of this fact are trying their best to sow seeds of hatred among Baloch people, using various tactics like kidnapping, killing and terrorist activities inside province. As a result of all these things, many Baloch activists want separation from Pakistan, thus Balochistan wants a separation from Pakistan. It is a general perception of public that Law and enforcement agencies are behind these missing persons.
It needs to be highlighted here that Pakistan Army and other law enforcement agencies have improved the internal and external security situation of the country with the help of counter terrorism operations. ISI has also notably prevented numerous terror acts in the past few months. Operation Zarb-e-Azb has eternally eradicated terrorist networks from federally administered tribal areas.
